Book a private car at Toya Pakeh harbour and have your guide meet the boat from Sanur. The drive is the price of admission — uphill, winding, potholed in ways that challenge the word, past settlements half-hidden in plastic on a road that becomes a goat track with ambitions. One final steep climb, and you arrive somewhere that has no right to exist this well.

Amarta Penida reads like a colonial whitewashed quarantine warehouse crossed with Necker Island — infinity pools stepping down toward the channel, a cliff walk to a candi bentar (Balinese split gate) framing Bali’s Mount Agung across the strait, shaded terrace dining, wine arriving sooner than you’d expect. You are at the top of the world, looking out and feeling it.

The menu shouldn’t work — Margherita pizza beside chargrilled turmeric prawns, nachos beside Ayam Bakar — and delivers completely. Then the bill arrives, gentle enough to feel like a mistake. Afternoons unfold slowly, and that is the point.

The Gold Coast narrows here into something almost fragile — a strip of land suspended between the Broadwater and the open Pacific, stretching from Main Beach up to the Seaway at The Spit.

A shared walking and cycling track cuts through coastal bushland, shifting constantly between paved path, gravel, and sand. Low scrub forest presses in close. Bush turkeys move like restless locals, scratching through dunes and scattering at the sound of tyres or footsteps.

On humid days the air carries salt and relief at once — sea breeze pushing inland through the trees. From raised dune sections, the ocean appears in sharp horizontal lines, as if the world has been pared back to sea and sky only.
Cyclists move faster through it, threading undulating tracks, dipping between shaded pockets of forest and exposed coastal edges where wind dominates everything.

At the northern end, the terrain softens into deeper sand before opening out to the Seaway — where concrete replaces bush and the ocean finally takes full control.

On the stairwell of Crystalbrook Albion hangs a series of portraits unlike anything in any other Sydney hotel. Kate Leigh and Tilly Divine — arch-rivals, razor gang leaders, the most notorious women in Surry Hills’ criminal history — stare out from the wall of the building that once stood as a moral stronghold in the neighbourhood they ran.

The former convent, built in 1901, has been a women’s refuge and a hospice. It watched Surry Hills transform from Sydney’s most nefarious corner into one of its most desirable postcodes. Now, as Crystalbrook Albion — 35 rooms, no two the same, honour bar, rooftop garden — it holds a Michelin Key.

The path winds downward through Cala Canyelles like a secret being slowly revealed. White walls slip above you, bougainvillea spilling across stone, palms leaning into heat and light. Each turn of the staircase shifts the view: sea appears, disappears, returns again in sharper fragments.

Below, the Mediterranean grows larger with every step. It feels less like walking down… and more like entering something.

Nothing prepares you for the reef. Not the photographs, not the documentary footage, not the person who told you it was worth the trip. You have to put your face in the water.

At Hardy Reef in the Whitsundays, the shallow coral gives way to deep open blue at a drop-off point that produces something close to vertigo. Purple and pink coral arms extend upward. Parrotfish nibble at the reef’s surface. A giant clam the size of a suitcase flinches as your flippers push water past it.

The fish here have evolved into their surroundings with extraordinary precision — striped to match the arms of luminescent coral, coloured to disappear against rock that was never designed to be plain.

Snorkelling the outer reef is easier than most people expect. The stinger suit takes some adjustment. The rest takes care of itself.

White flecks on a lace monitor mirror soft bites of sunlight dancing across twigs at foot. Silica sand yields beneath high ridges where Yakka trees stand beside gnarly Banksia and tall Pandanus palms. A cooling-soft sea breeze drifts into the fern gully, carrying resin scent as shadows gather thick.

Lower canopies open to ancient hardwoods strangled by alien-like vines wrapping trunks in brain-nervous system patterns. Bush turkeys wander unfazed, beaks dipping into mulch mounds to monitor nest temperatures while eggs incubate beneath the leaf litter. Deep blue horizon glimpses pop between folds of the tree line, framing a habitat that functions as home.

A wing-cleaning blue wren flits from fern fronds, seeking refuge from the heat in the gully’s cooling air while the forest floor rests quiet beneath dappled shadows.

The first thing to understand about ultra long-haul flying is that the plane is not the problem. You are.

More precisely: the choices you make in the first four hours determine the last four. Drink alcohol freely at the start, and you will spend the final stretch dehydrated, headachy and watching the flight map with the focus of someone trying to bend time.

The advice is unglamorous but consistent across every long-haul frequent flyer: water over wine, movement over stillness, light food over the full tray. The cabin air is dry. Your body knows this before you do.

The new generation of long-haul aircraft — larger windows, better air pressure, quieter cabins — have reduced the physiological toll significantly. The airline wellness menus are largely genuine. The coconut water is not ironic.

The barrel room first — old building, damp stone underfoot, several degrees cooler than the Riverland outside. Between them sits the still house. Electronics that aren’t intrinsically safe are banned outright, so the tour leader carries a two-way radio and you carry nothing.
What comes out of it took Double Gold and 96 points at the 2026 New York International Spirits Competition — the highest whisky score in a field of more than 500 entries from 39 countries.

The site dates to 1914. The pizza oven and the lawn arrived with the 2016 rebuild. The kitchen cooks with the spirits.

The exterior of Art House Townhouses on Wills Street is deliberate and stern — timber, stone and steel in a modernist row that references Bright’s historic semi-industrial streetscape while its roofline quietly mimics the layered alpine peaks rising behind the town.

Inside is a different conversation entirely.

Each of the five townhouses is named for an Australian artist — John Olsen, Joy Hester, Sunday Reed, Margie Sheppard, Dean Bowen — and decorated around their work. The interior colour schemes, fabrics and textures are drawn directly from the limited edition prints hanging on the walls. The building doesn’t contain art. It is organised by it.

Sunday Reed was the patron of the Heide art movement. Joy Hester one of its most significant painters. Their names are on the doors of luxury alpine townhouses in Bright, Victoria. That is either audacious or entirely fitting — and probably both.

Where paper lanterns drift inward as easily as they glow outward, Mira Moon occupies a Wan Chai corner shaped by Chang’e’s banishment. Jade rabbit silhouettes mask the windows. Incense hangs heavy over fresh varnish. The air feels warm and still against the skin. Mythology here wears leather boots, pulling visitors past thresholds designed for a moon goddess.

Walls shift from art to a hands-on fantasy charged with magic. Patterns collide celestial lore and Ziggy Stardust’s costumes. Surfaces bridge a quiet palace and a rock star’s wardrobe, refusing stillness as the narrative pulls inward.

A soft glow glides through an open frame, settling beside a table where the elixir waits undisturbed. The noise of the street fades as the moon’s pull takes hold.

The grilled halloumi arrives with char marks still hissing. The dolmades are hand-rolled. The moussaka is slow-cooked, generous, and exactly what you want after a morning in alpine air. The Greek salad — chunky cucumber, plump olives, ultra-fresh tomatoes, marinated feta, dried mint, a proper pour of extra virgin olive oil — is not dressed for a bistro. It is dressed correctly, and the difference is obvious from the first fork.

Pixie Michal and his partner Janine are at the front. They will find your table, learn your name, and make you feel like you booked a dinner party rather than a restaurant.

That feeling — the Cypriot warmth of it, the unhurried pace of it, the elevated patio under elm trees with North Victorian sun doing its work through the canopy — is worth the drive. And the drive, as it happens, is worth it entirely on its own terms.

Option one: north on the Hume to Seymour, then inland through quaint Victorian-era towns — Yea, Alexandra — into steep rolling hills where olive groves hold the slopes and cattle graze the valley floors. Option two: over the Black Spur. Twenty minutes of single-lane mountain road through enormous stands of mountain ash, then out into open country past Buxton and the Cathedral Range — sheer bending rock columns above the bright lime-green flats of the Goulburn Valley, fed by alluvial soil and winter rain.

Both roads deliver you to Eildon. The dam wall is five minutes from town. Snob Creek Falls, fifteen minutes south, is tiered rock cascades in a mountain gully with a viewing platform designed for families and photographers alike.

Then Pixies. Halloumi, dolmades, slow lamb moussaka, chilli prawns with lemon, Greek salad done properly. Pixie Michal and his partner Jannie at the front, making you feel expected.

Cash is king in Japan — not as a preference, but as a quiet daily requirement. Without it, getting around becomes genuinely difficult in ways that feel completely upside down for travellers from cashless societies.

Set on a curve of the Hastings River, the resort plays both sides of the story: a neat marina to one shoulder, and on the other, a wild, glassy stretch of mangrove-lined water that feels untouched, unhurried… almost sacred. Then the small seductions begin.

A handwritten welcome. Frangipani blooms breathing sweetness into the room. A bottle of Côtes du Rhône waiting like a quiet promise. Subtropical ease, bottled and poured.

Mountain ash trees anchor Sherbrooke Forest slopes. The track winds through fern gullies. Sunlight fractures the canopy, striking damp soil. Air carries wet earth and decaying wood scents. A lyrebird scrapes leaves near a log.

Mountain ash bark peels in fibrous ribbons to reveal smooth white trunks. Fern fronds spiral along creek beds. Visitors stop as a lyrebird mimics camera shutters or grinding machinery. Moss cushions fallen trunks. Humidity clings to skin.

Shoulders drop as footsteps slow on the leaf litter. The gullies hold their breath until morning returns.

Amongst Southbank’s big city brands, a custom asado fire pit anchors the riverside space. Light catches the stainless steel structure where fat drips steadily onto coals, releasing aromatic smoke that fills the room. Sound stays quiet against the soft murmur of the river.

Cow hide-upholstered chairs frame the table. The kitchen presents a Western Plains pork roast; an entire beast tied across metal bars, flame-licked and yielding rich umami. Rare bottles from the Humberto Canale winery appear on a list spanning South America, France, and Spain, requiring expert guidance.

The shared table becomes a catalyst for connection. Patience yields the enduring peace of discovery, turning a simple meal into an act of love.

The approach into Paro Airport is one of the most dramatic in aviation — a series of tight turns through Himalayan valleys, mountain peaks close enough to feel personal, the runway appearing at the last possible moment on the valley floor. It is, in the best sense, an arrival.

Bhutan keeps 60 percent of its land under forest cover by constitutional mandate. The air is cold and clear. The valleys hold dzongs — fortress-monasteries — and suspension bridges and rice paddies terraced into hillsides that have looked largely the same for centuries.

Six Senses operates five lodges across the western and central valleys. Each integrates with its particular landscape: traditional timber lines, bukhari wood-burning stoves, vegetable-dyed rugs, floor-to-ceiling windows framing views that require no editing. The wellness programme — meditations, monastery visits, private astrology readings — draws directly from Bhutanese practice rather than borrowing from it.

A two-level pontoon anchored off Southbank waterfront layers native foliage overhead like a forest canopy. Heaters hum as aromas of roast pumpkin and sea herbs drift from the deck. Salt air mingles with sourdough steam near timber railings as the Yarra flows dark beneath.

The menu highlights Stoneground Sourdough Flatbread with warrigal greens pesto, burnt pumpkin hummus, and Mount Zero chickpeas. Portarlington mussel crumpets balance nduja against cultured cream and kelp soy butter. Halloumi cubes carry persimmon and quandong compote topped with macadamia nuts.

A hand reaches for another crumpet while the river slips past the deck. As the city hums, sheltering diners share native inspired plates in the cool air.

We climb to 10,000 feet, clear of traffic, and before I know it we’re nose up, power off. The stall warning beeps, then suddenly we drop and roll to the side – looking straight at the ground as the aircraft begins to spiral.

“OMG.”

Just as quickly, we recover.

“Your turn.”

Double gulp… It’s my tenth flight lesson in a Cessna 172 at Wangaratta Aero Club, set against Victoria’s High Country.

Reindeer antlers appear not as decoration, but as language. On cushions, mugs, signage that reads “Counting Reindeer” instead of “Do Not Disturb.” The wilderness has been edited, not erased.

Broadbeach’s restaurant strip runs on neon and festoon-wrapped palms, and then a magenta glow spills across the footpath that belongs to none of it. Follow it. Inside, a ceiling of cherry blossom covers the room, lit hard from below, hung with paper lanterns, spreading from a trunk that rises beside a pillar. A par can throws stage light up into the flowers. Dark timber, black walls, candle glass flickering on every table. On the rear wall a neon sign reads it was all a dream.

The room borrows from a Bangkok side alley and a Kyoto street after midnight, and holds the illusion long enough that you look twice at the blossom to check.

Three years running we’ve called this the Gold Coast’s best modern Asian. The food earns it. The room is why you’ll remember it.

Burleigh at 6pm in winter — dim light, chill beats, and a dining room angled entirely toward the ocean. Split across levels, every table finds the view. Floor-to-ceiling bi-fold windows open just enough to let the sea creep in — salt air, wave rhythm, the skyline of Surfers and Broadbeach flickering in the distance.

The menu moves in waves. Sashimi and small plates first — kingfish with lemongrass and chilli, tuna tataki soft and buttery, lobster dumplings rich with truffle honey. Then larger, slower dishes: jackfruit tamarind curry, dry-aged trout with maple ponzu, sides built with detail and intent.

As the room fills, heat rises, a window opens wider — and suddenly the ocean feels close enough to touch. Wine, sake, conversation, music — everything lifts a notch. This is not just dinner. It’s a coastal mood you settle into, and stay longer than planned.

Few public trails in Australia deliver this particular friction — the wild and the rarefied occupying the same narrow ledge above impossibly turquoise water.

The Millionaires Walk runs between Point King and Lentell Avenue in Sorrento, barely a kilometre of low-grade clifftop path above Port Phillip Bay’s shallow reefs. The elevation reveals the bay at its most extraordinary — strings of reef visible through water that shifts from jade to aquamarine depending on the light.

Peer through Coast Tea-tree, Moonah and Coast Beard-heath at glimpses of the far reaches of the bay. Then turn inland: low boundary fences keep the sightlines open in both directions — the homeowners keep their bay views, trail walkers get an unobstructed look at flagpoles flying Australian maritime flags, lavender gardens, expansive sun rooms and sprawling lawns. Victorian-era manor homes of the kind that once housed state premiers and dignitaries, slightly grand, slightly English, entirely unapologetic.

A winding timber staircase near Lentell Avenue drops to a small cove beach below. Worth the descent.

Built in 1554 under Grand Master Claude de la Sengle, this vast stronghold once hoisted the masts of Malta’s naval fleet. Today, the stone is still the dominant force — below your feet, above your head, beside you as you sleep. The furniture and design are deliberately muted, understated to the point of invisibility, because nothing here needs to compete with the walls.

Sleeping inside feels cocooned. Safe in a way that’s hard to explain until you’ve done it — like the building itself is holding you. And then morning comes, and every window opens to a harbour view that has looked more or less the same for five centuries.

The boat idles. You go in off the side and for a moment there is nothing beneath you but inky blue, dropping further than you want to think about. Flippers tight, you kick hard toward the shelf. Then the floor rises to meet you and the reveal is gloriously surprising.

Colour arrives all at once — fan coral moving with the swell, brain coral solid beneath, the open lip of a giant clam. Parrotfish working the coral with a sound you can hear. Coral trout in two colourways, males and females different because they begin life as female.

Somewhere in it, George. Head bump, war paint, close to two metres, entirely unbothered. Fat Albert held this territory in 1998. A lineage of kings, formerly queens, each succeeding the last at the same address.

There is no pontoon and no crowd. Less famous than the outer reef, and better for it.

Tribeca — the triangle below Canal Street — was hit hard by September 11. The neighbourhood De Niro had long called home lost its confidence along with its proximity to the towers. His response was characteristically direct: the Greenwich Hotel and Locanda Verde next door, two projects that gave the downtown address a stamp of credibility and cool before the rest of the city caught up.

The 88 rooms at the Greenwich are individually decorated — no two the same, each a considered assembly of antiques, handmade fittings and quiet luxury. Tibetan rugs, Moroccan tiles laid in imperfect yellow, hand-carved marble baths, carved oak beds with blue leather headboards. French doors open onto balconies where, on a clear night, stars are faintly visible above Manhattan.

From here, Soho is a walk. The Financial District is a walk. The cobblestoned streets of Tribeca are directly outside.

The crossing from Sanur to Nusa Penida runs across open Indian Ocean on the island’s southern face. In October swell we experienced one to one-and-a-half metre conditions — hard hull impacts into each trough, constant spray, and enough lateral movement to cause neck injury simply from contact with the canopy frame. The Sea Dragon, one of the most booked vessels on this route, made international news after capsizing and killing a passenger. Book your crossing with full awareness of what the ocean can do here.

Manta Point is exposed water. Swell can push swimmers toward rock with little warning. The reef snorkel section runs on strong tidal current — without flippers you will fall behind the group and the boat crew does not conduct head counts. A passenger left behind in open water has no government rescue service available. Recovery depends entirely on other boats being present and noticing.

Life jackets are mandatory. Flippers are non-negotiable for the snorkel. Dry season crossings — April to September — carry significantly lower risk than shoulder months. The reward for doing this right is a manta ray at close range, moving through blue water at its own unhurried pace, wingspan wider than a person is tall. Worth it. Prepared.

Walk down from the summit of Monte Solaro and the island reveals itself differently — not as a backdrop for photographs but as a place with its own internal logic. Orchards, citrus groves, narrow winding streets. The hermitage of Cetrella, built into a natural viewpoint by Carthusian monks in the fourteenth century. The Sentiero dei Fortini, a coastal trail past Saracen fortifications where the sea below shifts through every shade of blue.

The famous faraglioni sea stacks rise from the water like compact monoliths. Up close, they produce something unexpected: genuine emotion, the way certain large things do.

The Capri Foundation has quietly transformed the island into an open-air artists’ studio. The Piazzetta still gathers its nightly crowd. But there’s a Capri for everyone now.

The locals say it simply – meet you at Sorrento’s at four. Sorrento Restaurant and Bar sits on the waterfront edge Airlie Beach’s Cora Sea Marina with a direct unobstructed view to Double Cone Island and the turquoise water stretching between.

On a clear afternoon the water is crystal, the islands sharp on the horizon. Then a tropical storm builds – and within minutes the view transforms completely, islands disappearing into grey curtains of rain, the water shifting from glass to silver. Both are fascinating. Sorrento’s handles both beautifully.

Fresh local prawns, small seafood platters, pasta, a burger – upmarket taste, super casual. Old boaties at the bar. An afternoon guitarist working through Jimmy Buffett and yacht rock classics. The whole scene carries the relaxed tropical ease of Christopher Cross’s Sailing – calm waters, no agenda, the Whitsundays beginning immediately offshore.

This is as zen as it gets.

For the well organised traveller leaving Tokyo, Mt Fuji is often about speed – fast trains, direct routes, a clear view on arrival. But step away from the obvious, and something shifts.

The older line connecting Ōtsuki to Kawaguchiko carries you into the mountains aboard the Fujisan View Express—a retro-styled train with timber seating, dining tables, and wide windows that slow everything down.

As it climbs, the landscape begins to take over. River ravines, small villages, neatly partitioned fields, then mist, moss, and a wilder edge.

Houston, the Eagle has landed. You are at Tranquility Base, Sea of Tranquility, Moon — 0.6741° N, 23.4730° E, facing Earth.

Gravity is a suggestion here. Stamp your foot and it doesn’t land — it floats back down, leaving a perfect print in chalky grey regolith that will outlast every building on the planet you just left. The only thing you can smell, faintly, through the suit supply line, is something like burnt flint. Metal and cold.

Walk two hundred metres from the Eagle and the silence becomes total. Intercom off: only your own breathing, your heartbeat, the sound of your fingers shifting inside your glove.

Then turn toward Earth. The Pacific appears first — electric blue, curved, impossibly vivid against the black. Everything humanity has ever been or built or felt fits inside that arc.

Nothing prepares you for this.

The track begins where Beach Avenue ends, swallowed into the scrub. You wind along soft sand beneath an arching tea-tree canopy, the air thick with herbal eucalypt, past fallen branches and pale clumps of Hare’s-tail grass. Then a left turn, and you climb. The path steepens, sandier with every step, and the roar of the Southern Ocean builds ahead — loud, then louder — while the dunes hold you from the wind.

At the crest the silvery Coast Spinifex parts and the horizon arrives all at once: wide, expansive, wild. Pigface — locals call it beach bananas — mats the dune tops in briny pink. Below, Montforts sandstone monoliths reach from their rock pools, glowing violet at sunset; beyond them, only Bass Strait — the far horizon and the endless smash of cold southern water on the reef.

A long timber stairway drops to the cove. Worth the descent.

Beyond Art Cafe shadows, pavement warms while Surf Club flags snap against a light breeze cooling radiant heat. Couples link hands near scrub as cyclists slip past on fresh concrete. Waves roll flat beyond dunes, carrying salt tang that marks the hour.

The shared width of the renovated pathway keeps joggers and strollers at ease, avoiding the crush found elsewhere. Locals move through this morning ritual to reset the mind before city hums rise, while a healthy blend of residents and visitors finds balance in the rhythm of breath and tide.

The shoulder feels the steady press of movement as lungs expand with clean air, leaving a quiet clarity that settles long after the sun climbs higher.

Nobody at the front desk asks why you’re here tonight. The man two booths down missed his last train after a late meeting — paying less for a reclining chair than a taxi he can’t afford, and somehow it feels like a small victory rather than a setback. The woman in the corner isn’t catching anything. She told her family she was “out,” which is true, and has headphones in, deep in the anime adaptation of The Rose of Versailles — a story about a woman who simply decided to be someone else.

The booth is barely bigger than its chair: blanket, reading lamp, a wall of manga on one side, DVDs and streaming on the other. Free melon soda hums from the vending machine. By 3am the whole floor has the hush of a library quietly full of people, each one borrowing somebody else’s story for a while.

Across the travel world, the rise of the sober-curious isn’t a whisper anymore—it’s a tide. And here, in a place where the horizon stretches endlessly and time loosens its grip, the experience is evolving. Less about excess, more about presence.

Entry to Sanctuary Cove is via a long shared buggy driveway through manicured grounds. Golfers, homeowners, tourists and day-trippers from every part of the world converge here — an upmarket melting pot on a balmy spring morning at 27 degrees.

The marina precinct flows easily between designer boutiques, a Steinway piano store, a French patisserie, modern Asian dining and Australian seafood. The sound is peaceful — gentle lapping of hulls on water, the soft electric buzz of a passing golf buggy, café conversation spilling into the central square.

Then you step aboard a Horizon FD90 superyacht and the scale recalibrates everything.Open plan multi-deck living larger than most homes. Master suites below with full ensuites. Muted Scandinavian tones, subtle timber — nothing gold, nothing old world. Gyro stabilisation so precise your sparkling wine stays level in open water. Views from every seat, lounge, dining table and fly deck.

If I were that wealthy, I’d do all my meetings from here via Zoom.

The cenotaph is genuinely beautiful. Designed by Kenzo Tange, its arch frames the Peace Flame, the long reflecting pond, and across the Motoyasu River — the Genbaku Dome. The chest beneath its arch holds the names of every person killed by the atomic bomb. The inscription reads: *Repose ye in peace, for the error shall not be repeated.*

The queue for the photograph is long. Tourists wait with phones raised for their precise composition.

Nearby, an elderly man sits and raises his voice. I use a translator app to listen. He explains, at length, that this memorial — the park, the narrative, the carefully framed view — is an American construction. A symbol of control. Of world dominance dressed as peace.

Parts of what he says feel true. I leave the queue, cross the bridge, and find the Rest House instead.

The piano is on the second floor.

Hiroshima Station is modern, light-filled, generous. Three or four trams line the passenger terminal — one of them painted in flowers, lifting the spirit before the journey begins. We board without fully knowing what we are heading toward.

Within two blocks we cross the Enko River, then the Kyobashi — two of six branches of the Ota delta that lace through the city. The bridges carry decorative curved iron and the water bends around them in wide arcs. For an Australian, born in Melbourne, the resemblance is immediately striking — river city, low-rise foreground, distant mountains beyond. The same kind of liveable, human scale.

Along Ekimae-dori Avenue, Hiroshima goes about its day. Designer stores, restaurants, well-dressed people. Colour and life. Not a single visible reminder of the past.

We exit briefly for Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki — layered pork belly, crispy soba, tangy sauce. Then back on the tram. A gentle incline. The ruins appear through the trees.
